"Here's how you run a marathon...

Step 1: You start running
...there is no step 2!"

So, it's been about a week since I posted last. This past week was great. Even though I skipped running on Wednesday because of the rain, I ran 2 on Tuesday, 3 on Thursday before lunch at an Indian buffet downtown with Melissa. I don't think I'd ever had Indian food before, but I liked everything that I grabbed. And nothing was too spicy, which I was worried about. Then I cleaned the house and drove straight to Agave to meet he gang for Happy Hour! Betsy and Corey even came! As if margs weren't enough, we went to B12 for Karaoke! I didn't sing til the very end, but I now know my song! Originally, I though "Come to my Window" was the way to go, but after someone else sang "I'm the Only One," I knew it was the better Melissa Ethridge song!

Friday, after my much needed nap after work, Melissa her friends and I went to Tonic for a Videology Party. Music videos on a huge screen, plus smoke machine, laser lights and a dance party! Not really my thing but I'm really glad I went and had fun while I was there. After that I headed to McNally's to catch up with my friends Joe and Jarred.

Instead of sleeping in on Saturday like I tried to do, 8:30 was the best I could do. Once I woke up, I FINALLY finished Kitchen Confidential and headed to the trail! I think it's strange to drive somewhere to run, but it's a nice change of scenery and much needed shade. I went a little over 4 miles, but not all of that was running. Still a good distance though. The rest of the day
I cleaned my room and actually dusted. I HATE dusting! I got dinner at Flat Branch with the Rods and headed to The Deuce for the rest of the night. Not only were my friends there, my favorite people from MRC met up after their company picnic. Talked to Jake and Brandi some more about buying a house and I look forward to working with them. Nothing like mixing a little work with pleasure!

Week 2 and Abbie's Wedding in Fayetteville

Week 2 has the same runs as the first except for Saturday. I ran more than the 1.5 and 3 on Tuesday and Wednesday so I don't feel as bad as I should for skipping Thursday's 1.5 miles. Thursday, Matt and I met a guy from craigslist who had an 06 Jetta that I wanted to check out. To make a long, hectic, and frustrating story short, I FINALLY got my new car on Friday night!!!!!! She's an 06 Jetta, 5-speed, Black, w/ leather seats, power everything, and a pretty rocking sound system! There are a few things I need to get done to it, but I'm still very happy with my decision!

Friday night, I had a little gathering at my house with some great friends! Pizza rolls and drinks and staying up WAY later than we should is always fun. It almost makes me miss living at home, but then I realize that I see them just as often as I see some of my Columbia friends, and once again, am very happy with my decision!

Saturday, it was my mission to run 3.5 miles like my training says too. Before I realized how hard it is raining, I drove to my old stomping grounds to run around the RPHS track, but I didn't have the guts to get close because I think there was a track meet or something! Eventually, I called my brother. Mike met me at 24 HR Fitness in Lees Summit. I ran 3.65 miles before I removed my sweatshirt which was covering my stats! I kept a constant pace at 5.8 and could still breathe and even talk on the phone a little. Then I did a few abs, and legs (which I'm really feeling in my butt) and left for lunch at Chipotle with Marc, Charlotte, and Shelby before I sped home to leave for our road trip!

Katy, Natalie, Sarah and I head South at about 3:30. The drive down was so fun! We have so many memories and so much to catch up on, I don't think there was a quiet minute. Plus, Sarah got her Dilly Bar so all is well in the world! After trying to check in to the wrong hotel, we arrived to our cute little suite, changed out of our riding clothes and headed down to Dickson St. Other than parking, which we eventually found not too far past the bars, it was really cool! It was still pretty early when we got there so we went to Jose's for dinner. Awkward older biker crowd and not good margs or food, but the live band was a good start to the night. From there, we moved to a bar called Stir. Classily keeping to ourselves ;) we eventually got hounded by the tool academy, accepted a few free drinks, then moved on to the next place for some karaoke action! Of course, Sarah picked Spice Girls, which was most def a crowd please! We danced with an old man who looked like Willie Nelson and eventually left, only to get lost on the way home. Seriously.. What is your deal AR?

Sleeping in on Sunday was much needed because we even made it to the last few minutes for breakfast! I haven't had Biscuits & Gravy FOREVER and it definitely hit the spot. After breakfast, we all piled back into the 1 bed and talked until about 11:30, showered, packed and went to lunch. We had to check out of our hotel by 2 so we put our stuff in my car and hung out in the lobby until it was time to put our dresses on. We thought we left with plenty of time to get to the chapel, but after getting lost TWICE (thanks for nothing, MapQuest) we got seated right before it started! Everything was PERFECT. Everyone looked great! Abbie was gorgeous and her dress was so elegant! We couldn't stay for the whole reception because we still had a 3.5 hour drive home, but we got to chat with Abbie and Lauren, take pictures and eat cake!

All in all, it was a phenomenal weekend!

Week 1 and Washington DC

Wow.... Blogging is a lot harder than I thought! Actually, it's hard to make yourself sit down and reminisce about what's going on. Since it's been so long, I may split it up into 2 posts to keep you interested!

Week 1 of training went fine, though, it's much harder to run when you "have" to go a certain distance. Wednesday the 5th was the first time I actually got up before work to run. Morning runs seem much harder, plus, I was battling traffic and high school kids biking and walking to school. However, once I finished, I felt great and wanted to brag to everyone that I ran 3 miles in the morning! Wednesday night, I headed back to Raymore to hang out with my friend Megan. Unfortunately, Randy, my friend and her husband, died in a bike wreck on Sunday, May 2nd. We just hung out at the hotel and looked through pictures and I finally got to meet his family. It was terrible circumstances, but I'm so glad I got to see everyone before I flew out to Washington DC.

Thursday morning, Katy dropped me off at the airport for my 7:40 flight and I was on my way. Once I landed, my cousin picked me up and we went over to Georgetown. It had a great little downtown area, but holy population! There were tons of cars and people, but the weather was nice so we mostly walked around. After lunch at J Paul's, where I had an awesome fish taco, we walked down to the Potomac River and over to the University. Pretty buildings and neat looking, city style houses! After that, we drove back to my cousin's house about an hour (with traffic) south of the city. I ran my 1.5 mi as required by my training, but it was tough with the hot weather and hills. Finally, we got dressed up and headed back downtown for dinner and our official tour of the West Wing! We got to see the Rose Garden, the door to The Situation Room, the Press Room, THE Oval Office, and other rooms I can't remember. It's pretty much how I imagined it. There were pictures everywhere from the White House Photographer who just follows around the President to log his day. Also lots of older art. It was a once in a life time experience and truly was wonderful!

Friday morning, Mom, Dad, Jonathan and I went back to the White House to get the public tour of the East Wing. Also impressive, but more in a museum kind of way! Then, we got on our walking shoes! First the Washington Monument! Not as impressive as the St. Louis Arch (don't tell anyone for StL I said that) but awesome, none the less. We headed down the hill to the Reflecting Pool, by way of the WWII Memorial! The "Pool" is pretty dirty and covered in geese and but once we got up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, you could tell how it got it's name. What a cool, architectural idea!?! The Vietnam War Memorial was what I imagined. My mom had a cousin we found, and my dad knew a few guys from high school that we found. Next we walked by the Korean War Memorial, which was surrounded by a veteran field trip. All the little old men were so cute! Our next stop was at the Roosevelt Memorial. It seemed to go on forever! Tons of stone and water, with a different quote or saying every 10 feet. This was my favorite...

Our last stop was at the Jefferson Memorial. It had a gorgeous location off the Tidal Basin, but there was a lot of construction going on around it, so that took away from it's beauty. After a full day of walking... 16,000 steps according to Dad's pedometer... we agreed to babysit the kids so my cousin and his wife could have the night out before he left town for 2 weeks.

Saturday morning we decided to sleep in! I ran my 3 miles around the neighborhood, then Mom, Dad and I drove to the metro station furthest South and too the train in. It took about 45 minutes but we didn't have to worry about parking or traffic, so it was definitely the way to go. We wanted to go to the Department of Engraving but it is closed on the weekend. We decided on the American History Museum. Saw the actual flag of the Star Spangled Banner and had no idea it was so huge! Also saw Julia Child's kitchen. Next we had gyros in the downstairs of the Old Post Office Tower and headed to the Air and Space Museum. The space shuttles and airplanes were really cool, I'm just not much of a fan of museums. I'd rather walk with a purpose than kind of putter around reading. I do, however, love walking around cities and am surprisingly good at finding my way around. And subways are fun :)

Mom, Dad, and I flew back on Sunday night and were greeted by Mike, Jessie and the kids, Charlotte and pizza! What a great way to end a weekend! Monday, however, was a cold, wet and unsuccessful day of car shopping. But thank you, Dad, for your patience!

Officially Training...

Well, I wanted to post on the 28th since it was the 7 month mark, but life has been kind of average lately. Still haven't bought a car but have had intentions to the past 2 weeks. It's hard to get motivated to make a decision you don't want to make that is going to cost thousands of dollars. I'm sure I'll get excited once the whole thing is over, but until then, it's just a pain.

It is officially WEEK 1 of my 30 week training program! Thanks to JD, I found a Hal Higdon schedule online. The first 12 weeks should be pretty easy, but it'll get me into the routine of running Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday with a longer run on Saturdays. When I was putting the miles on my calendar, I realized home much running is going to get in the way of upcoming events, like weddings and float trips, but I'm determined to make it happen. I can run a 3 mile with no problem, and found an app that will track my time, distance, and pace. I'm still around a 10 minute mile, which I'm happy with. I'm going to need to find new paths around Columbia for once my runs get longer. When I run on sidewalks, I have a pretty good idea of how far I've gone, but I really want to start running the trails. Supposedly, they are better on your joints. Plus, Columbia has several of them and they will be shady once it gets hot.

I've also started some P90X videos (Thanks Marc, for downloading them for me!) I've only done the abs one all the way through because it's only 15 minutes. The others are an hour and pretty intense so I haven't worked up to that yet. I got through about 30 minutes of the yoga video and even that was hard. Hmm... All in time :)

Oh, and did I mention I'm going to Washington DC on Thursday?! That means LOTS of pictures next time. I'm REALLY excited since I've never been. I even get to see the Oval Office because my cousin works in the White House so we get a special tour! Plus, we get to walk a ton, and I'm even going to run an unofficial 5K while I'm there.
